Model Train Questions?

If you’re not one of my regular subscribers, let me quickly tell you a little about myself… And then I’ll tell you what model train resources I recommend… even if you are a complete beginner, or are an advanced railroader.

Okay… I’ve been collecting, building, buying and selling HO scale model trains for over 27 years. It all started with a simple Christmas gift. It was an oval Lima HO scale model train set (which I still own today)… I absolutely loved that train set…

Every other opportunity for a gift I was asking for extra track, new locomotives, passenger carriages, building kits and more… I remember spending hours in the local hobby shop looking at the large range of accessories and wondering how I could earn the money to buy them…
Fast forward 27 years later…

And I’m constantly amazed at the fun this hobby has provided me. It has, and will be, a hobby for life! Not only has it been fun but I’ve learned so many technical skills… carpentry, electrical wiring, problem solving and design. I’ve learned to be creative and developed a hands-on knowledge of geography from making landscapes. I learned how bridges are put together so they don’t collapse…

Creating miniature replicas of life has allowed me to enter a different world.

Over those 27 years I have been through literally every emotion imaginable. Frustration… anger… jubilation; although the frustration was mostly self-inflicted as I had ignored the basics!

I think I own most HO scale model train books on the market… every time I wanted to build a new landscape, set up new controllers or fix a problem… I would buy a book to tell me how.

See, nowadays, with all the latest advancements in model trains… being able to control multiple trains from one controller, steam locos with steam and sound… it is very easy to make some expensive mistakes.

And this is the exact reason why a few weeks ago (and after continually being asked to do so for over 2 years), I decided to review the model train “how to” books on the market…

The truth was, most books were okay… But a beginner, or an advanced railroader, would have to buy 5 or 6 books (maybe even more) to get 80% of the information they needed… that was until I found 2 downloadable books – Model Trains for Beginners and Model Train Help.

The Conclusion…

Husband And Wife Can’t Get Enough After 9 Model Railway Layouts

Every day we receive emails from enthusiastic model railroaders but this Husband and Wife model railroading team were perfect to profile today…

Meet Brian and Ann Silby from The Rylstone Wellingborough Northants England.

My Wife and I have 9 scenic model railway layouts that we take to model railway shows all over the UK and sometimes to the continent. These model railway layouts are all under 2 metres long and they travel in the back of our station wagon. I model in N scale, while Ann models in Z scale.

How long have you and your wife been modeling railroads?

Ann and I have been modeling railways for about 25 years!

Which scale do you and your wife model in?

I model in N scale (continental) whilst Ann models in Z scale. We model in these scales because of space. We only live in a small house.

What brand of equipment do you model with?

I use Fleischmann Roco Minitrix and Kato. All Ann’s trains are Marklin.

Are you using DCC or analog controls?

I use DCC controls on two of my 6 layouts. The other 4 are analog. Ann only uses analog.

Where do you show your layouts?

We show our layouts all over the UK, also in Belgium and this year we have been invited to Eurospoor in Holland.

Why have you chosen the scenes you have created?

All of our layouts are actually based on areas where we have been on Holiday and were attracted by the scenery.

How much time do you spend modeling?

We spend quite an amount of time modeling. I would say about 1 day every week. This year we have 33 shows booked in on our schedule.

Do you think model trains is the greatest hobby in the world?

Yes we do… it is so therapeutic and relaxing.

Why Do Model Railroaders Need Clarity?

Clarity... Why do model railroaders need clarity?

Because the model train opportunities are endless!

You can build a layout in your basement, attic, shed, garage or
garden. You can run steam or diesel locomotives. You can have
multilevel railways with rivers, dams, mountains, snow... You get
the idea!

The opportunities are truly endless in this wonderful hobby. Some
points to consider are:

Where are you going to build your layout?

In my case it's "Where will my Wife let me?" :-) I find that I
prefer being in the shed where I am out of the way and can enjoy
lots of "me" time. I have a friend who has a large model train
layout in his front lounge area.

How much space have you got available?

The entire layout needs to be easily reachable by the operator to
correct derailed trains, line faults, etc. "Against the wall"
layouts need to be restricted to 3 feet wide. A layout size of at
least 3 feet 6 inches x 4 feet would allow space for a continuous
loop railroad in HO scale. A layout space of at least 6 x 4 feet
would be a better option. This would allow room to have a
reasonably interesting model railroad.

Which scale you are going to use?

This is largely dependent on the space you have available and how
much detail you want. Detail is easier to see and reproduce on
larger models. HO scale is the most common and has the widest
variety of accessories available. But if space is at a premium then
consider N scale. You can build an N scale layout in an area about
30% of that area needed to build a similar layout in HO scale.

Will you model a real life layout or create your own?

Most model train enthusiasts will eventually create models of real
life systems. It can be challenging to model real life systems, but
is very rewarding. Google Earth provides us with the perfect tool
to check layouts, sizes, scenery, buildings and more.

The Same Mistake Time & Time Again!

It's great reading through the emails people have sent regarding
their model train frustrations and what they think about model
trains.

The amazing part is that these people range from kids as young as 7
years old to mature modelers that are almost 80 years old!

There are some fascinating stories especially from people that have
collected for 30+ years. I'm asking some of them for permission to
publish some their stories... as everyone can benefit from them.

From the emails I noticed there is a common thread with modelers
that have been in the hobby less than a few years... A lack of
patience and clarity.

Model trains doesn't mean you have to be a technical genius, a
brilliant artist or have a huge amount of money... But, you must
have patience.

You will thrive in this hobby if you have patience. Model trains is
another world where you can lose yourself and forget all the
worries you may have.

Most detailed layouts have taken the owners many, many years to
build and that is what is so great about this hobby... You are
constantly changing, upgrading and modifying your system.

This hobby is for life... so enjoy it!

A couple of days ago I sent out an email asking what people think
about model trains, and what there frustrations are?

And I just can't believe the response!
I tell you one thing that is really clear -
there are a lot of modelers out there , that have spent
a lot of money and time on their model trains but still
don't have a layout that works well or one they are
proud of.
From the feedback I noticed there is a common thread with modelers
that have been in the hobby less than a few years... A lack of
